Why is contemporary music so HORRIBLE?

Bieber fever, crap rap, emo and of course the bilge that is contemporary pop – there is absolutely no good music anymore. Musicians are more famous for what they do (I.E. getting arrested or doing something outlandish) than they are for their music. What the heck is wrong with the industry and why are we as consumers putting up with it and schilling out for garbage?
case and point – look at the grammy award winners for this year – the black eyed peas? lady gaga? you have to be kidding me. this is NOT music.
